Juan was born in Colombia, South America, in the city of Medellín, and was raised in New York City from the age of three. He currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.

His interest in photography began at the age of 10 with his first camera, a 110 mm Vivitar given to him by his parents. They quietly and slowly removed the camera after realizing they would not be able to support his growing film habit.

At the age of 17, with Photography instruction from his father, he took a class trip to Canada and photographed for three days with his father’s fully manual 35 mm Olympus SLR. The taste of flexibility and being able to control every aspect of a photograph was so sweet, that Juan soon began to research his next camera. In 1984 at the age of 18, for his high school graduation gift, his parents gave him the camera of his dreams; a Canon F1 – The Workhorse. For the next 19 years, this was to become his best friend, and one that he would expand on with a multitude of lens and accessories. Although he traveled everywhere with his camera and photographed everything from architecture to nature and people, his studio and major theme for over a decade would be his enormous back yard: New York City.

Within the Commercial arena, Juan has shot for the covers of automobile sales magazines, bridal magazines and private company catalogs. He has also photographed the interior of restaurants and millionaire mansions throughout the city of Atlanta. Within the fashion industry, Juan has shot for local clothing design/manufacturing companies as well as for local clothing distributors. In the artistic realm, Juan has successfully exhibited and sold his photographs throughout the city of Atlanta. His artistic photography has sold in small and medium size venues and his artistic nudes have become a hot commodity amongst young up-and-coming professionals.

Juan considers the first 20 years of his photographic journey as on-the-job training, often guided by the trends of society. What he has seen and lived up until now has served as inspiration, direction and education. He has reserved the next 20 years however for taking the least frequented roads, going to more unusual places, and shooting with the camera’s eye instead of his own. “Humans judge but cameras don’t”.

Out of his vision for creating a special company that combines his specific artistic direction with the need of his customers, comes 1i Photography.
